Alexei Navalny on Thursday decried Russian President Vladimir Putin as a "naked king" clinging to power, during what marked the Kremlin critic's first public appearance since he went on a hunger strike in prison. Putin, who has ruled over Russia for 20 years, in early April signed a law that paved the way for him to stay in power until Critics say the Russian leader has effectively made himself president for life. Navalny, who's Putin's most prominent critic, made these comments while joining a Moscow court hearing via video link. A judge rejected Navalny's appeal of a conviction over accusations he defamed a World War II veteran — a verdict broadly seen as politically motivated.

The Russian leader is apparently unfazed by all of this. Armin Wolf, a n Austrian reporter, recently asked Putin for more background on the "half-naked" photos, stating , " There are many photos of you half-naked, which is rather unusual for a head of state. These photos were not taken by paparazzi or tourists.

Alexei Navalny was sentenced to two-and-a-half years in jail in February for parole violations that he insists were trumped up. He was arrested at the border as he returned to Russia from Germany, where he was recovering from nerve agent poisoning. This would ban them and open up activists to long jail terms. Navalny has been on a hunger strike for the last three weeks and has been transferred to a hospital. Doctors fear he is running out of time, and at any moment, could die from cardiac arrest or kidney failure.
